Lightbulb Scion tC Oil Change facts - 01-31-2008, 07:28 PM

We just purchased a new '08 Scion tC and I plan to complete the oil changes myself. I'm trying to get some information on the following:

1. Where is the oil filter located?
2. What size is the oil bolt? I'm expecting it is metric so the size in mm would be great.
3. Do you have any hint or suggestions on performing the oil change?

The Scion OEM filter part number is: 90915-10004
The TRD filter part number is: 00602-90915-006
I know K&N makes one as well.

The oil filter is right next to the oil pan, towards the front bumper.
Use a 14mm wrench to remove the oil drain bolt.
It takes 3.8L of oil.
It's not too difficult. Just get a pan, a filter-wrench (it looks like a hoop with a handle), a funnel, a new filter, and oil. Try not to make too much of a mess.

After I fill it up, I typically reuse the containers to store the used oil for recycling.

I try to get the drain plug out quickly so-as to not cover my hand/arm in oil.

I try not to spill any oil on the engine so it doesn't start to stink.

I pay attention to the dipstick so as to not over/under fill it.

I usually wet the ring where the filter connects to help it make a seal.

I make sure to use a quality oil cap.

I make sure to change it regularly and only use oil that I know is within spec. I try to seek out good oil that is recommended by people or independent studies, rather than through advertising or company-sponsored studies.

In general, the OEM stuff treats my motor well. If in doubt, I would err for the dinosaur stuff or a blend over a synthetic (and just make sure to change more frequently).

In the hot weather, don't go too thin. In the cold weather, don't go too thick.

If your car leaks oil, pay attention, try to figure out where it's coming from, and determine if it's a serious problem.

Default oil info - 07-26-2009, 12:17 PM

I just bought a 2007 scion tc 5 days ago. I got the maint req like so I had to do some research on changing oil myself. I have been changing oil on my own cars for years. but, I did not know where the filter was or what type of oil to use (petrolum or synthetic). In my research I did find out the engine is the same as a Camery. Anyway, I am a Fram guy so, I got a fram filter (PH4967) and 5 quarts of mobil 1 synthetic oil. I thoght synthetic was best because I am changing oil every 5000 mile. I am old school when oil was changed every 3 months or 300 miles no matter what car you had.

The owners manual is a great resource for basic maintenance on your vehicle.Oil change recommendation by manufacturer is 5,000 mile intervals or every 3 months.
